Thoughts on Forgiveness

(excerpt from Liz’s Spring Newsletter from 2019)

Lately I have been thinking a lot about “forgiveness”.  Over my years of sitting in circles with others, I have had many realizations about the word “forgiveness.”  Many spiritual teachers and teachings talk about letting go of anger and suffering from experiences involving others that we feel hurt or wronged by.  They make it sound so simple, “Just let it go!”  Just let go of the abandonment, the betrayal,  pain and suffering, physical, emotional and otherwise.  “Just let it go!”  How on earth do we do that?  As I have asked myself that question over my years and sat in circles with many others asking that exact question of themselves, one thing I have learned for sure, is however I begin to move towards forgiveness, which is my own healing, it must be true for me.

In my opinion, forgiveness does not come overnight.  It is a big intent to heal towards forgiveness and a big ask, to seek someone’s forgiveness.  I know forgiveness comes in stages and that we are solely responsible for taking the steps to free ourselves (yes ourselves!) from the suffering we deem others have caused.  Forgiving another does not mean we agree with their actions taken.  What forgiving others can do is reclaim our empowerment from the experience.  To continue to be victimized by the experience, tells us it still has power over us.  Forgiving takes us to our personal freedom.

I would like to share  some steps I have learned that really helped me in my forgiveness practices.

  •  I take responsibility for my life exactly as it is now and  honour (not reject)  all my feelings about it.  This can lead to less projection onto others and the expectation that its someone else’s responsibility to “fix” things for me.
  • Be open to the lessons being offered through the experience I am having, and share them with someone I trust.  When we can accept the lessons, as difficult as they may be, it is an opportunity to awaken, not punish.  The Toltecs teach that this is when your parasite becomes your ally.
  • Know that we are all seeking love, even though under the circumstances this may be very difficult to see through someone else’s actions.  Without awareness, the wounded young self within all of us, can cause so much hurt and damage through unconscious actions.  When we can begin to glimpse this perception, the door to compassion begins to open.

I wish you all a beautiful renewal time as we enjoy the spring season!
I send each of you my love,

May 2021 be a Transformative Year for All of Us in the Very Best Ways!

Our past year brought with it so many changes and challenges and at the same time positive and valuable insights and experiences; some long overdue, in my opinion. As my years pass, I realize again and again the simultaneous experience of my humanness is of joy and sadness, ecstasy and suffering, all at the very same time.

Much attention was brought to our health; to be more mindful of ourselves and others, to maintain optimum health as a protection from illness, preparing our own food, slowing down our travel and social events, living simpler lives, going back to basics.

Political attention was spotlighted in the USA, and many tragedies were witnessed which brought to the surface the systemic racism of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) in the USA and Canada. I experienced it as a massive underlying wound of the last century, bubbling up to the surface of our collective humanity, and finally breaking the surface in a way we no longer could look away from. In my circles, this has propelled us to look deep into the ways we have been part of the injustices of BIPOC, and educate ourselves, take actions and responsibility to stand in solidarity with, instead of separation from BIPOC. All of the past year’s occurrences has pushed me along, to continue to strive to be a person who makes a difference in the ways I am able, and to discuss, support, and continue to learn as much as possible about ways to be part of the solution, not of the problem. May our new year guide us all to become more “awake” than ever.

Dream of the Planet

Hello and Blessings to you!

I am currently in New Mexico, soaking up the sun and desert energy that nourishes me to my core. Every day I go and sit in the morning sun, with my bare feet in the dusty sand of this land and offer my prayers in gratitude for my health, my life, and all the love that surrounds me, in the form of human, animal, bird, tree and rock.

Within all the challenges of this last year, I do my best to take the Eagle’s view beyond the layers of normal perception and shift into a broader perception of distance and expansiveness, regardless of what is being projected from the multitude of sources out there in the Dream of the Planet, especially now.

I am not finding it easy and I am discovering possibility, inspiration and even Miracles.  Thank the Creator for Miracles!

Every other year in the past 20 or so of them, I would be preparing and soon be heading off to Teotihuacan, Mexico with a group of seekers, to immerse ourselves in the practices, traditions and culture of the Toltec people.  I choose to go at this time each year, to participate in the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) ceremonies of honouring the ancestors with prayer and celebration.

Due to the global situation at this time, I understand that all ceremonies and celebrations for this sacred time have been cancelled in Mexico. The cancellations of these cultural and traditional ceremonies are a great loss and not only in the most obvious ways of the celebratory nature of the creativity, song and special foods of the time.  I recognize it  as a much deeper loss for the peoples who hold the lineage of these traditions and have for generations, as a way of coming together to uphold and carry forward the ancient practices of their heritage in the ways it has been done year after year after year.  My heart is heavy for this reason.

As a person who has very little information of my own heritage, I hold deep respect for the teachings I have received from my mentors in Teotihuacan over these years and so much reverence for the pride in which they are carried forward to their next generations.

This year I will build my own offrenda (altar) and offer my love, my prayers, candle-light, and photos, the foods and drinks my ancestors enjoyed, and watch and listen over the day and night for any guidance they may offer me.

I encourage you all to do this, to open your hearts and appreciate from where you have come and all the paths that were cleared for you by your ancestors to stand exactly where you are today.

For our beloved family in Teotihuacan, la familia de Cervantes, I ask for those of you that know them and those of you that have not had that  great good fortune yet, to please include them in your prayers  to warm and soothe their hearts at this time of Dia de los Muertos, as they have had great personal loss in this past year.  Thank you,

To each of you I send all my love.
To the Eagle I send my respect and gratitude for the higher vision.
